Kashmir is one of the few destinations in India that rewards you no matter when you visit. Each season paints the valley in a completely different mood. The 'best' time really depends on what you want to see and do — so here's an honest, month-by-month breakdown to help you plan.

Spring (March to May)

This is when the valley wakes up. Almond and cherry blossoms cover Srinagar, the famous tulip garden opens for a few weeks, and the Mughal gardens are at their most colourful.

Ideal for: first-time visitors, photographers and families who want pleasant weather without peak-summer crowds.

Summer (June to August)

The classic season. Days are cool and comfortable while the rest of India swelters. Meadows in Gulmarg and Sonmarg turn a deep green, and it's the best window for Ladakh as the high passes open up.

Ideal for: honeymooners, families, and anyone wanting the postcard-green Kashmir.

Autumn (September to November)

Quietly the most beautiful season. The chinar trees turn crimson and gold, apple orchards are heavy with fruit, and the crowds thin out.

Ideal for: photographers, couples and travellers who prefer calm over crowds.

Winter (December to February)

The valley disappears under snow. Gulmarg becomes a genuine ski destination, the gondola runs over a white landscape, and evenings are spent by log fires with kahwa.

Ideal for: snow lovers, adventure travellers and anyone chasing that winter-wonderland feeling.
